The One Where I Left Too Soon
Irby’s Grand Opening,
all-day shift—
held court like royalty,
until my throne threatened to become a pillow.
Cashed out responsibly,
dignity intact, (mostly)
stumbled back a block,
face-down dreaming, (of Her)
probably drooling,
definitely snoring.
Meanwhile,
back at the scene,
Mari appears—
sunshine at midnight,
Autumn breeze left her smile bright.
Phones buzz.
My name’s called.
No reply.
She’s there.
I’m asleep.
The Universe howled-
punchline delivered.
Today’s redemption:
Poolside penance,
afternoon recovery,
then back to Irby’s—
Buckhead wildlife safari
and chaos therapy
to quiet my shame.
Tonight I’ll stay awake,
eyes wide open,
dignity on standby,
hoping fate’s reruns
finally cast me in the right episode.
